A Chinatown Evening Date in Bangkok: Yaowarat After Dark

Yaowarat wakes up twice a day. By morning it is gold shops and wholesale stalls; after sunset, the neon signs light up, the street-food carts roll out and the side lanes fill with small bars in old shophouses. That second shift is what makes Chinatown one of Bangkok’s best evening dates: you can walk it, eat your way through it and end somewhere candlelit, all within a few blocks.

This route starts just before dusk near Hua Lamphong and ends with a nightcap off Soi Nana. Every stop is in DateRoute’s Old Town area, and you can pace it at a stroll.

1. Golden hour at Wat Traimit

Area: Old Town (Chinatown) · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Hua Lamphong

Start at the eastern gate of Chinatown, where Wat Traimit houses the Golden Buddha, a seated figure of solid gold that is one of the city’s most famous sights. Arrive in the late afternoon: the white-and-gold hall glows as the light drops, and it is calmer than the big riverside temples.

If you have time, the temple’s Heritage Center tells the story of the Chinese community you are about to eat your way through. It is a good conversation-starter for a first or second date.

Good to know: Open daily 08:00 to 17:00, so plan to arrive by around 16:00. Entry to the Golden Buddha hall is 40 baht for foreign visitors (free for Thai nationals); the Heritage Center is 100 baht. About a five-minute walk from MRT Hua Lamphong. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered.

2. Roll noodles at Nai Ek

Area: Old Town (Yaowarat) · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Wat Mangkon

As the neon comes on, walk down Yaowarat Road to Nai Ek Roll Noodles on Soi Yaowarat 9. The house dish is rolled rice noodle soup (kuay jab), and the crispy pork is the thing to share alongside it. It has earned Michelin recognition in the past, but it is still a casual shophouse.

It is a relaxed first stop: quick service, low prices and no dress code, which leaves budget for the rest of the night.

Good to know: Open daily 08:00 to midnight. Noodle soup is 70, 100 or 150 baht by size; crispy pork is 100 or 200 baht at last check. Address: 442 Soi Yaowarat 9.

3. Street-side seafood at T&K

Area: Old Town (Yaowarat) · Budget: ฿฿ · Nearest station: MRT Wat Mangkon

If you want a second, bigger course, T&K Seafood is one of Yaowarat’s best-known seafood spots, with pavement seating right on the main road. Sitting outside with the traffic and neon signs around you is the whole point; this is the photo of the night.

If you would rather graze, the stalls along Yaowarat Road are an alternative. Noodles start around 40 to 100 baht a bowl and toasted buns around 30 to 60 baht.

Good to know: Open daily 16:00 to midnight. Expect seafood dishes from around 200 baht. Several street stalls close on Mondays, so a Tuesday to Sunday visit gives you the most choice. MRT Wat Mangkon (Exit 1) is about a minute’s walk from Yaowarat Road.

4. Dessert at Ba Hao Tian Mi

Area: Old Town (Yaowarat) · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Wat Mangkon

Tucked into the lane at the Soi Nana end of Phadung Dao Road, Ba Hao Tian Mi is a small dessert bar known for silky Chinese-style puddings in flavours like goji berry, black sesame and pandan kaya. One pudding each, or two to share, is the right amount after dinner.

Good to know: Address: 8 Phadung Dao Road. Puddings cost around 108 to 168 baht at last check. Hours vary between 10:00 to 22:00 and 10:30 to 22:30 depending on the day you check, so go before 21:30 to be safe. There is also a branch at EmSphere on Sukhumvit.

5. Gin and tonics at Teens of Thailand

Area: Old Town (Soi Nana, Chinatown) · Budget: ฿฿ · Nearest station: MRT Wat Mangkon or Hua Lamphong (short walk)

Soi Nana in Chinatown, not to be confused with the one on Sukhumvit, is a short lane of shophouse bars. Teens of Thailand is a small gin bar serving gin and tonics infused with local flavours such as Thai tea, chrysanthemum, jackfruit and salted guava. Tell the bartender which flavours you like and let them build something for you.

Good to know: Address: 76 Soi Nana. Open 19:00 to midnight (to 01:00 on Friday and Saturday), though opening times have changed before, so check its Facebook page. Seating is limited, so arrive early in the evening.

6. Thai folk music at Tep Bar

Area: Old Town (Soi Nana, Chinatown) · Budget: ฿฿ · Nearest station: MRT Wat Mangkon or Hua Lamphong (short walk)

Finish a few doors down at Tep Bar, a bar built around Thai culture. Later in the night, live musicians play semi-traditional Thai music, and the crowd of locals and visitors often ends up dancing between the tables. It is a fun, loud way to end the date after the quiet of the gin bar.

Good to know: Address: 69-71 Soi Nana. Open from 17:00 or 18:00 until midnight Sunday to Thursday, and until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, depending on the day you check. The music usually gets going around 22:00. Check its Facebook page before you go.

Tips for a Chinatown date

  • Take the MRT. Yaowarat traffic is slow in the evening. MRT Wat Mangkon puts you right on Yaowarat Road, and Hua Lamphong is one stop away.
  • Avoid Mondays. Several popular street stalls close on Mondays, so Tuesday to Sunday gives you the fullest choice.
  • Pace it. Start around 16:00 at the temple, eat between 18:00 and 20:00, and save the bars for after 21:00.
  • Carry cash. Small stalls may not take cards, and small notes make sharing easier.
  • Wear walking shoes and something that covers your shoulders and knees for the temple.
  • Rain plan: if it pours, skip the pavement tables and swap T&K for an indoor table at Nai Ek.

Want the surprise without the planning? Choose the Old Town area in DateRoute, and it will reveal a Chinatown evening one stop at a time, with indoor swaps ready if the rain arrives.
