A Sukhumvit Date Night from Thong Lo to Ekkamai

A Thong Lo to Ekkamai date night: a first drink at The Commons, Thai dinner at Supanniga, a speakeasy behind a wooden door and a gin distillery to finish.

A Sukhumvit Date Night from Thong Lo to Ekkamai

Thong Lo and Ekkamai sit side by side on Sukhumvit, two long sois running north from the BTS line, and between them they hold some of Bangkok’s easiest date-night material: a relaxed community mall for a first drink, a much-loved Thai dining room, a speakeasy behind a wooden door, and a gin distillery to finish. You can do the whole evening in one direction, starting on Thong Lo (Sukhumvit 55) and ending on Ekkamai (Sukhumvit 63), with short Grab rides filling the gaps.

Opening hours change, so check before you set out.

1. The Commons Thonglor

Area: Sukhumvit · Budget: ฿–฿฿ · Nearest station: Thong Lo (BTS), Exit 3

Start somewhere low-pressure. The Commons is a community space on Thong Lo Soi 17 with a mix of food and drink vendors, so neither of you has to commit to one menu. Grab a coffee, a glass of something, or a small plate and find somewhere to sit.

Good to know: Open 8am to 1am, but individual vendors keep their own hours. It is a 15 to 20 minute walk from Thong Lo BTS Exit 3, so a 5 to 10 minute taxi or Grab is the easier option. Address: 335 Thong Lo Soi 17. Valet service runs until 10pm or midnight depending on the day you check, so drivers should confirm.

2. Supanniga Eating Room (Thong Lo)

Area: Sukhumvit · Budget: ฿฿ · Nearest station: Thong Lo (BTS)

For dinner, Supanniga Eating Room serves home-style Thai cooking built around family recipes, with a strong lean towards the eastern province of Trat. It has been on Thong Lo since 2012 and remains a reliable choice for sharing plates across the table, which is half the fun on a date.

Look out for dishes such as moo cha muang, pork cooked with a sour leaf and a rich tomato-tinged sauce, and nam prik khai pu, a crab-roe chili dip.

Good to know: Address: 160/11 Sukhumvit Soi 55, near Thong Lo Soi 6. Hours vary: typically lunch 11:30am to 2:30pm and dinner 5:30pm to 11:30pm (last order 10:30pm), though dinner may end earlier, so confirm before you go. It closes over Songkran. Booking ahead is sensible on weekends.

3. Wattana Panich (an earlier, cheaper alternative)

Area: Sukhumvit · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: Ekkamai (BTS), roughly 20 to 25 minutes’ walk

If your date starts in the afternoon, or you would rather swap a sit-down dinner for something more local, Wattana Panich on Ekkamai Road is famous for its beef noodle soup, from a broth that has been kept going for decades. It suits a “late lunch, then drinks” version of the date.

Good to know: Address: 336 Ekkamai Road. Hours vary between 9am to 7:30pm and 10am to 7pm depending on the day you check. Beef noodle soup was around 100 baht and larger stewed beef bowls around 150 baht at last check. Arrive well before 7pm, and take a Grab or motorbike taxi from the BTS.

4. Rabbit Hole

Area: Sukhumvit · Budget: ฿฿฿ · Nearest station: Thong Lo (BTS), not confirmed

After dinner, slip behind an unmarked wooden door on Thong Lo Road for Rabbit Hole, a speakeasy that has been one of the street’s best-known cocktail bars for a decade. For its anniversary, some of its original cocktails have come back to the menu.

Good to know: Address: 125 Thong Lo Road, between Soi 5 and Soi 7. Opens from 7pm, closing around 2am; it may be closed on Mondays, so check the bar’s Facebook page before going on a Monday. Cocktails were around 350 to 450 baht at last check, but that was years ago, so expect current prices to differ.

5. Iron Balls Distillery, Ekkamai

Area: Sukhumvit · Budget: ฿฿฿ · Nearest station: Ekkamai (BTS) is the closest station to Sukhumvit 63; walking time not confirmed

Finish the night one soi over at Iron Balls Distillery, on the ground floor of Park Lane Ekkamai. The bar is built around the still that produces Iron Balls Gin, so the drinks list naturally leans on gin. Look for the Charred Sandalwood Negroni, a signature, and note that distillery tours can be booked in advance.

Ekkamai is the brand’s original “bar-slash-distillery”, with a second outpost on Sukhumvit 45 in Phrom Phong. Make sure you head to the Ekkamai one.

Good to know: Address: G/F Park Lane Ekkamai, Sukhumvit 63. Open evenings daily, roughly 6pm to 1am, with cocktails from around 350 baht. Confirm hours and tour availability with the venue on +66 2 714 2269.

Tips for a Sukhumvit Date Night from Thong Lo to Ekkamai

  • Use Grab between sois. Thong Lo and Ekkamai are both long roads, and several stops sit well away from the BTS. Short rides save energy and sweat.
  • Book dinner, not drinks. Reserving Supanniga takes the pressure off. The bars generally work better as walk-ins, but message ahead on busy weekend nights.
  • Check Monday plans. Rabbit Hole may be closed on Mondays, so midweek dates are safer from Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Pace the gin. The two bars both pour serious cocktails. Have water in between and plan a ride home rather than driving.
