An Old Town Date in Bangkok: Temples, Canals and a Riverside Dinner

Bangkok’s Old Town is the city at its most romantic: gilded temples in the morning, a short ferry across the Chao Phraya, a canal lit up after dark and a table facing Wat Arun as the sun goes down. Everything below sits within a few kilometres of the river around Rattanakosin and Chinatown, so you can link the stops on foot, by ferry and with a short ride on the MRT Blue Line.

Temple hours and ticket prices change, so we flag the spots where details are uncertain below. Check again on the day before you set out.

1. Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)

Area: Old Town · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Sanam Chai

Start where the old city began. Wat Pho is home to the vast Reclining Buddha, plus quiet courtyards lined with chedis that are lovely to wander through together before the heat builds. It sits right next to the Grand Palace, so arrive early and you will share it with far fewer people.

Good to know: Hours are 08:00 to 19:30 and admission is 300 baht, with children under 120 cm free. Closing time is sometimes given as 18:30, so check before a late visit. Dress modestly: shorts are not allowed, and shoes come off inside religious buildings. Use Sanam Chai MRT Exit 5 for this side of the river.

2. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) by cross-river ferry

Area: Old Town · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Sanam Chai, then ferry from Tha Tien Pier

From Wat Pho, walk down to Tha Tien Pier and take the short cross-river ferry to Wat Arun. The crossing takes a few minutes and is one of the simplest pleasures in the city. The temple’s porcelain-studded spire is beautiful close up, and you’ll see it again later from your dinner table.

Good to know: Hours and fees vary depending on when you check: expect roughly 08:00 to between 17:30 and 18:00 (last entry around 16:30), with an entry fee for foreign visitors of 100 to 200 baht. Treat these as estimates and bring cash. The ferry costs about 5 baht, cash only. Cover your shoulders and knees.

3. Golden Mount (Wat Saket)

Area: Old Town · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Sam Yot (about 1 km walk)

If you have energy left after lunch, climb the spiral stairs of the Golden Mount for one of the best free-standing views over the old city’s rooftops. The walk up is gentle and shaded in parts, and the gold chedi at the top is a good place to stop and take it all in.

Good to know: Hours are around 07:30 to 19:00, with a 100 baht fee for the climb. Hours can vary by season, so please check before you go.

4. Khlong Ong Ang Walking Street

Area: Old Town · Budget: ฿ · Nearest station: MRT Sam Yot

This restored canal, which won a UN-Habitat award, runs along the edge of Chinatown. On weekend evenings it fills with street food stalls, little bars and live music, with murals lining the walls along the water. Grab a few snacks to share and stroll the length of it hand in hand.

Good to know: The walking street usually runs Friday to Sunday, 16:00 to 22:00, but the schedule changes with special events, such as daytime food fairs. Confirm it before planning around it. The northern end is a short walk from Sam Yot MRT.

5. Sunset drinks at the Rooftop Bar, Sala Rattanakosin

Area: Old Town · Budget: ฿฿฿ · Nearest station: MRT Sanam Chai (not confirmed by the venue)

Head back towards the river for golden hour. This small hotel rooftop on Maharat Road looks straight across to Wat Arun and over Wat Pho. It’s a classic spot for watching the temple light up as the sky turns pink.

Good to know: Hours are 16:00 to 22:30, with last orders at 22:00, at 39 Maharat Road. You can book online, by phone on +66 2 622 1388 or via Line (@salarattanakosin). Signature cocktails were around 360 to 390 baht at last check. Seats facing the river go first at sunset, so reserve if you can.

6. Riverside dinner at Supanniga Eating Room, Tha Tien

Area: Old Town · Budget: ฿฿ · Nearest station: MRT Sanam Chai (not confirmed by the venue)

End the evening a few steps away at Supanniga Eating Room’s Tha Tien branch. It serves home-style Thai cooking with views of the Chao Phraya and Wat Arun. Ask for a terrace table if the weather is kind, and order a few dishes to share.

Good to know: Hours are around 11:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, and weekends may open earlier at 10:00, so confirm before a weekend lunch. You can reserve online. The address is 392/25-26 Soi Phen Phat 2, Maha Rat Road.

Tips for an Old Town date

  • Dress for the temples all day. Covered shoulders and knees will get you into every stop, and light, breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable outside.
  • Carry small cash. The cross-river ferry and some temple ticket counters are easiest with cash, and Khlong Ong Ang’s stalls are mostly small cash purchases.
  • Start early, finish by the river. Temples are cooler and quieter in the morning, which leaves the late afternoon free for the rooftop and dinner.
  • Use the river to get around. The Chao Phraya Express Boat’s orange flag line costs around 18 baht per trip. Check the timetable, because services end in the evening.
  • Have a rainy-day backup. If a storm rolls in, swap the Golden Mount climb or the canal walk for a longer, unhurried lunch indoors.
